Marché des Capucins – Métro Noailles

During Manifesta 13 Marseille, the marché des Capucins and métro Noailles hosted the exhibition The Port: Where Histories Lie  that explored the multiplicity of histories of the city.

The marché des Capucins is a food market located in the heart of Noailles, district of Marseille also known as “Le ventre de Marseille”. Founded in 1956, it is the cheapest food market in town. The marché is situated on a square where formerly a Capucins monastery was located. Built in 1579, the monastery welcomed the largest male religious community of Marseille and by the end of the 18th century it included a sheet factory, a pharmacy, a botanical garden, a natural history collection and a cabinet of medals. In 1791, the monks were expelled, and the buildings and land were sold. The underground station métro Noailles is located next to the market.
