Manifesta History

Manifesta is the world’s only nomadic biennial, changing location every two years. For its thirteenth edition, Manifesta takes place for the first time in France in Marseille from the 28th of August until the 29th of November 2020.

Founded in the early 90’s by Dutch art historian Hedwig Fijen, Manifesta has always selected as host-city, a place in Europe that can act as a prototype for the world to come. Ranging from Rotterdam in 1996, to St.Petersburg in 2014, Manifesta 13 will open its door in Marseille, France in 2020, after which it will travel to Pristina, Kosovo for 2020.

Always seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography, Manifesta aims to act as an inclusive and sustainable European platform where current intellectual and political debates coalesce with the specific qualities and issues of a given location. In its last editions, Manifesta has transformed from a mono-disciplinary, curated exhibition of visual arts to an interdisciplinary, mediated knowledge- and-research-producing biennial that would move beyond human-centred perspectives on art and culture to encompass ecological concerns.

Each Manifesta comprises a range of activities extending over a period of two or more years. This includes exhibitions, installations, urban interventions, performances, films, educational workshop and activities, publications and conferences. In order to foster its mission of being an interdisciplinary platform for social change, Manifesta has recently introduced a holistic urban research (see Manifesta 13 Marseille’s pre-biennial urban study) and a legacy-oriented programming at the core of its model.
