The Galerie Zemma hosts the mixed-media installation of Chikako Watanabe (b. 1969, Japan), The Third House Owner (2018), inspired by historical Mediterranean trade.
In the 17th century, a French merchant, Isaac Fouquier travelled from Marseille to Amsterdam in a vessel loaded with merchandise. He finally decides to settle in Amsterdam and built his permanent residence, Huis Marseille (House Marseille). Today, the building is a photography museum. Different stories of the subsequent residents are told in Watanabe’s installation and linked in surprising and non-chronological ways to the city of Marseille and the Far East. It is an unexpected journey, created from various pieces presented, with different media, ethnographic and historical landmarks. The artwork of Watanabe engages curiosity about the history of the places by reshaping it from different points of views aiming at generating better interaction between people and cultures.
Opening the 28th of August at 18.00.
A proposal by Huis Marseille Museum for Photography in collaboration with the Galerie Zemma.
