Conceived for a retired ballerina and a saxophonist using the circular-breathing technique, Pirouette is an intimate and experiential meditation on physical endurance, ageing, movement, displacement and fragility. The work is rooted in Lapelytė’s research into the physical and psychological disciplinary regimes of traditional live art forms.
Lina Lapelytė is a Vilnius and London based artist, exploring the topics of gender, ageing, working within the remit of pop music architecture, folk songs and sound art.
Valentina Pace is Marseille based performer and works as a rehearsal assistant at the Ballet National de Marseilledirection (LA)HORDE.
Emmanuel Recht is a Manosque based saxophone player. He teaches at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Départemental des Alpes de Haute Provence.
Roots to Routes aims to build a bridge between Southern and Northern Europe: between people, organisations and networks from the Baltic States and South of France. The project challenges the relation to a particular territory; it questions concepts such as homebase, belonging and identity by considering them as fluid and changing in the 21st century. As a reference to From roots to routes (2002) by Jonathan Friedman, this project takes as its starting point the idea of “roots” that are ever-changing and formed within the context of globalisation, network economy and constant traveling.
Curated by Merilin Talumaa (EE), Maija Rudovska (LV) and Justė Kostikovaitė (LT), the project is a collaboration between artists, curators and non-profit organisations from Marseille and the Baltic countries. It will unfold across a series of exhibitions, performances, screenings, workshops, lectures and walks in Marseille from end of August until November, 2020.
