Angel Vergara shows through a psycho-socio-sensory practice of social space an image of our society perceived by children with sensory impairments or from disadvantaged backgrounds and the affects and thoughts that this society causes or inspires in them.
Working in public, Angel Vergara will create a series of ‘painting performances’ inspired by a preliminary series of workshops conducted with two groups of children, at a school for the visually impaired and via a not-for-profit community association active in social housing schemes. Entitled Les Belles Idées reçues (Beautiful Received Ideas) – an ironic reference to Flaubert’s Dictionary of Received Ideas – the project revisits the primary sense of the verb ‘to receive’ through the prism of ideas offered to the artist by children taking part in the workshops.
Faithful to his vision of art, and especially painting, as a ‘life exchange’, Angel Vergara’s project Les Belles Idée reçues reminds us that art is always and will always be the fruit of human relationships and encounters.
