Head Above Water

Hamish Pearch

28.08 - 07.11.2020 / Belsunce Projects

Marseille Fos Port is the main trade seaport of France. It is a perfect place to observe continuously flowing items, constantly being handled by port agents. Hamish Pearch transcribed with meticulous details all the elements that characterize the dockers world: neon lights at all times, the halogens smoke, the shadow of the security guard making his nightly rounds, accompanied by his faithful dog who detects the fear of intruders, the high gates, the ballet of shipping containers stored for a moment in a breathtaking industrial architecture.
The storage site becomes the recipient of a series of historical, psychological and physical combinations: a link appears between the movement of goods and changes affecting the body and mind. Thus the warehouse becomes a psychic projection, an incomplete encyclopaedic wunderkammer of cultural items, in the highly political context of the contemporary Mediterranean.
