The event is to mark Manifesta 13 in Marseille and takes place as part of ongoing work by the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Research unit of Aix-Marseille University (IMéRA) and its annual hosting of researchers and artists-in-residence. Its aim is to open up a space for reflection, meetings and debates about the state of contemporary creativity in the Mediterranean region.
Perspectives, voices, images and words converge in a bid to better understand what is oncoming and, beyond this, today’s unfolding disasters. Fissures and cracks are plainly present; and yet, what is in fact taking place between the two shores? Aren’t possible areas of unity emerging and taking shape?
Violence, borders, rebuttals, withdrawals, shipwrecks and conflicts do indeed saturate the political news of the Mediterranean region. That said, how before our very eyes is the contemporary art scene responding? Can’t it be viewed as the flip side of disaster – brio, life, inventions of forms unknown and new, all rarely seen in this world?

Shaded by plane trees and just behind the Palais Longchamp in central Marseille, the vision has been to create a space for conversation, learning about new ideas, and imagining new beginnings – ways to come together between both shores …
