Mathieu Kleyebe Abonnenc was born 1977, in Paris and lives in French-Guyana and Sète. Through a multifaceted approach that includes the activities of artist, researcher, exhibition curator and film programmer, Mathieu Kleyebe Abonnenc explores the areas neglected by colonial and post-colonial history. The absence, haunting and representation of violence are all the themes addressed in the artist’s work, which proceeds by extraction and excavation, and works to reintroduce into the collective history personalities and cultural materials that have been ignored. Recents solo exhibitions include Foundation Museo Jumex, Mexico, Baloise Kunstforum, Basel (2018) Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt (2016). His work was also featured at the Casa Barragan, Mexico and the Serralves Foundation (2019), the Hammer Museum (2018), and the 56th Venice Biennale (2015). He was resident of the French Academy in Rome-Villa Medici in 2016/2017 and was a DAAD guest in Berlin in 2019. He is running the Culture issues for the french publishing house B42.
