Explore the history of identities in Marseille through the work of Sara Ouhaddou at Espace Manifesta 13 on the 10th of December.

Ouhaddou (b. 1986, FR) was born in France within a traditional Moroccan family. Her dual cultural upbringing is one that is common within France and especially within Marseille. Within her work, she delves into the notion of dual culture and draws from both traditional Moroccan art forms and contemporary artistic practices, aiming to place forgotten cultural realities into new perspectives.

Ouhaddou resided in a residency at FRAEME (La Friche la Belle de Mai, Marseille) for four months in 2019, where she continued her research on the history of alphabets and the way in which they reveal history of identities and the development and often replacement of civilisations. She explores the history of Marseille, interested in the unknown passages, the objects found in the various archaeological excavations of the city and its surroundings, which can lead to doubting or further unravelling the city’s complex histories.

For the special occasion of this talk, Ouhaddou will be in conversation with Veronique Colard-Bovy, the director of FRAEME. We hope to welcome you all.

Tuan Andrew Nguyen’s practice explores strategies of political resistance enacted through counter-memory and post-memory. Extracting and re-working narratives via history and supernaturalism is an essential part of Nguyen’s video works and sculptures where fact and fiction are both held accountable.

Nguyen received a BFA from the University of California, Irvine in 1999 and an MFA from The California Institute of the Arts in 2004. Nguyen has received several awards in both film and visual arts, including an Art Matters grant in 2010 and best feature film at Viet Film Fest in 2018. His work has been included in several international exhibitions including the Asia Pacific Triennial 2006, Whitney Biennial 2017, and the Sharjah Biennial 2019.

Nguyen founded The Propeller Group in 2006, a platform for collectivity that situates itself between an art collective and an advertising company. Accolades for the group include the grand prize at the 2015 Internationale Kurzfilmtage Winterthur and a Creative Capital award for their video project Television Commercial for Communism.

Explore the work of Moroccan artist Yassine Balbzioui through the screening of three of his short videos at Espace Manifesta 13 on the 23rd of January.

Balbzioui (b.1972, MA) is a multidisciplinary artist who lives and work in Marrakech. Through performances and paintings, Balbzioui questions reality and appearances, often in a theatrical and humorous way. Subjects wearing masks and costumes are recurrent characters in his work, inviting the viewer into an imaginary world. His paintings are also marked by representations of animals that crosses notions of derision and of idiocy.

Balbizioui took part in numerous international solo and group exhibitions including the Karachi Biennial, Pakistan, 2019, AKAA, Paris, 2018 and Dak’Art Biennial, Dakar, 2018.

For the meet up, Balbiziou will present three videos Le voyage de Twin Freaks, Khalimna, and The fish inside me, and exchange with the public on his artistic practice and reflection.

As part of the collective project led by residents and shopkeepers of Noailles district, Manifesta 13 Marseille is collaborating with the associations Jardin de Noailles, Le Bois Sacré and JarDiniEres in MaRSEiLLe to make the neighborhood greener.
At the same time, Manifesta 13 invites Cabanon Vertical, a multidisciplinary art collective, to implement a participative reflection on a transitory development on the Canebière.
