Universal Tongue

Anouk Kruithof

10.11 - 19.11.2020 / Ballet National de Marseille

Anouk Kruithof’s work is an interdisciplinary approach at the crossroad of photography, sculpture, installation, photo editing, artists books, performance, video installation and performative acts in public space. Through a multiplication of mediums, the artist gives an overview of her research, highlighting what the web reveals about us as a society. Universal Tongue is a project about the internet as an anthropological space, in which 1000 different dances follow one another, coexist and alternatively appear on 8 screens, in 32 hours of video. The artwork and research database embody the way we fluently interact with the internet, an ever growing kaleidoscopic representation of global media society, and how we evolve in it as excited participants.
From 8.800 videos, selected by more than 50 researchers from all over the globe on Youtube and Instagram, Anouk Kruithof produced 8 films of 4 fours to be screened on simultaneous video installations. And dance we will. We do it solo, collectively, from the Macarena to twerk, from simple jump to moonwalk, the installation pictures dance as a universal language to express a diversity of cultural identities as part of a much bigger, globally connected society.
Universal Tongue was originally realised for the 32nd edition of the festival Cinekid, and presented in Amsterdam in October 2018, supported by the Mondriaan Fund.
